Introduction / Outline of the workshop
DYNTRAN project (Dynamics of Transmission: Family, Authority and Knowledge in the Early Modern Middle East, 15th-17th centuries) develops along two main lines of inquiry in order to interrogate the concept of “family” in the Mediaeval and Early Modern Middle East, and to explore the relation between family networks and the transmission of knowledge and authority. By initiating an interdisciplinary dialogue between history, textual studies, and art history, and by bringing together Mamluk, Ottoman, Persian, and Central Asian area studies, the project seeks to identify these networks and their social and economic environment on the larger scale of the Muslim Middle-East. Further, it aims not only at analysing the objects and the frameworks of the transmission, but also at examining the means, practices and strategies essential to this process in their historical context. Finally, the project is interested in investigating the adaptation and development of lineages striving to assure their permanence through time and space.
 
The initial DYNTRAN workshop (Marburg, 2015) focused on methodologies, on critical presentation of written sources in Arabic, Turkish and Persian, and on the sources relating to material culture. The second workshop (Cairo, 2016) was devoted to the issues pertaining to the modes and frameworks of transmission of knowledge and authority within family units and family-like groups.
 
The present workshop will pursue some of the general issues under research and investigate the theme of individuals and families as major actors in the transmission of knowledge and authority (“who”), as well as the mechanisms and structures, such as schools, corporations or personal relationships, etc., engaged in the process (“how”). In addition to developing these lines of analysis, the present workshop will take a particular interest in studying the actual objects of transmission (“what”) across time and space, for example, specialized knowledge, artisanal skills, religious knowledge, spiritual and political authority, but also status and wealth. Both synchronic and diachronic approaches will be applied within the general chronological framework of the project and beyond when necessary for the sake of investigation: our interests comprise both the horizontal and vertical networks, as well as geographical and social ascpects of their mobility and evolution.
